Art + Interiors: “In Dreams” Vignette

As I dream of ways to style prints from my In Dreams collection, I can't help but reflect on my time as Art Director for Designers Today and Home Accents Today

Interior design mood board curated by Linsey Gray inspired by a piece from her In Dreams series.

Arranging editor-selected furnishings and accessories into inspiring vignettes was probably my favorite part of the job. And it wasn't as easy as it may appear…

Ensuring each piece had a moment of spotlight while working together to create an entirely new story? Whew! I would literally break into a sweat over how to orchestrate silhouetted chairs, tables, pillows, and pendants within a very tight 2D space; Late-night calls with the editor-in-chief nudging the rug 30 pixels to the right and the vase “up just a hair” before sending it off to production the next morning. I loved it.

I often find myself missing that process, remembering how meditative it could be despite the pressure of a deadline.

Of course through my interior design work, this is a common way my partners and I present selections to a client. But it just hits different when curating a look around your own artwork and pieces you find inspiring.

And so, here I am, part procrastination and part mental escape, laying out my dream scenario for my latest art collection.

About the Collection

My recent work allows for more play, moving away from realism. I challenge perfectionism with loose, gestural marks that harmonize with wood grain. During this process, my focus shifts, creating moments of blur while my hand remains active. Many favorite details emerge from these meditative states—capturing a true flow and silent reverie.

Inspired by ordinary views along familiar trails, these pieces reflect my return to self and the restoration of forgotten dreams. Anxiety-driven marks create a vision of calm, reminding me that beauty often arises from discomfort and the unknown.

After taping margins, I apply fine layers of ground chalk pastel to the birch panel with a mop brush. Using my hands and cloth, I blend the layers, allowing the pastel to settle into the wood grain for a rich gradient. Contrasting shapes are loosely blocked in with PanPastels, followed by gestural marks from vine and compressed charcoal. Each layer is once again blended lightly, creating a soft, velvet haze.
